Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Heart Rhythm Disorders: Be Mindful of the Dose You Take!

Omega-3 fatty acids is a big business. Omega-3 fatty acids are widely used for cardiovascular benefit, to treat fatty liver, and as a treatment to make hair, nails, and skin healthier. In 2019 the global market for fatty acids reached a staggering 4.1 billion dollars, and it’s expected to double by 2025. This impressive expenditure reflects the worldwide popularity and the belief of many consumers on the potential benefits of this product.

Contrary to the popular belief, the potential benefits of Omega 3 fatty acids remain controversial and modest at best, but the potential risk of high dose use is well established. There are certain indications that there is a small yet significant risk for the consumer to develop heart arrhythmias (atrial fibrillation) owing to the use of Omega 3 fatty acids.

A recently published article in the ‘Journal of American Medical Association’ (JAMA) examined 4 large randomized clinical trials which studied the risk of arrhythmias in patients who consume omega-3 fatty acids. It was observed that the risk of Atrial Fibrillation occurred in twice as many consumers using Omega 3 fatty acids in high doses of 4g/d than in normal population. It was also observed that Atrial Fibrillation developed in an unbelievable 7% of people who were taking low to moderate doses (480mg – 1.8g/d) of Omega 3 fatty acids as well, however, this was not statistically significant compared to the general population.

If you are taking high doses of Omega-3 fatty acids, you need to be aware of the potential risk of developing atrial fibrillation, and as a medical professional it is my advice that you should never self-prescribe higher doses of Omega-3 fatty acids and should only take them under strict medical supervision. If you are currently taking Omega-3 fatty acids, make sure that you take a dose of 450mg or less per day to minimize the risk of developing heart rhythm disorders!
