LAAO Therapy Awareness Workshop

On the 18th of July 2024, we hosted a landmark event at the National Hospital in Sri Lanka, the LAAO (Left Atrial Appendage Occluder) Closure Awareness Workshop. This workshop was a significant milestone in advancing awareness and understanding of this crucial therapeutic procedure.

I had the privilege of leading the workshop, focusing on the latest advancements, techniques, and implications of LAAO therapy.

We were honored to have Dr. Bharat Vijay Purohit, Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist & Director of CathLab at Yashoda Hospital, Hyderabad, India, share his invaluable insights with us.

The workshop offered an in-depth exploration of LAAO therapy, covering essential topics such as patient selection criteria, accurate diagnosis, and tailored treatment plans for those with atrial fibrillation. We delved into the latest procedural techniques, advancements in device technology, and best practices for optimal patient outcomes. Discussions also included ongoing research and future developments in left atrial appendage closure.

About LAAO Closure:

The Left Atrial Appendage Occluder (LAAO) is a device implanted to prevent blood clots from forming in the left atrial appendage, a small sac in the upper part of the heart. This procedure is especially significant for patients with atrial fibrillation who cannot use long-term blood thinners. At the National Hospital in Colombo, where I have performed numerous LAAO closure procedures, we offer a safe and reliable alternative to traditional anticoagulant medications, ensuring a substantial reduction in stroke risk.

Expertise at the National Hospital Colombo:

The Colombo National Hospital in Colombo is the only facility on the island that offers LAAO closure. All surgeries in this regard are performed under my supervision. This enables us to provide specialized care and innovative solutions to our patients.

I thank everyone who participated and contributed to making this workshop a success. Your dedication to advancing cardiology and improving patient outcomes is truly inspiring.
